Staying Focused on Health In Winter

With the winter settled in, it can be harder and harder to stay active at home. While hitting the gym is always your best (and warmest) bet, there are some days – looking at you, blizzards – where it just isn’t an option. Here’s some tips to keep active during the months where we’re stuck at home most often.

First, try taking a walk. It seems simple, but it’s one of the best ways to keep ourselves active. Even if you aren’t into bundling up and checking out the snow drifts around the neighborhood, you can use a staircase (or an aerobic stepper for those with ranch style homes) to kick things up a notch.

One of the hardest things to overcome in the winter is the abundance of television and snacks. However, binge watching tends to come with a lot of pause sessions and bathroom breaks. Whenever you take one of these breaks, charge yourself an “aerobic tax.” Simply put, when that butt comes off the couch, do ten jumping jacks! Five burpees! Fifteen pushups! Be creative, and before you know it, you’ve burned off at least part of those pesky snacks, and you’ve kept that heart rate up.

The final tip is simple – dedication. It’ll be twice as hard to force yourself to keep up with your workout routine and habits when it’s cold and dreary outside, having a personal trainer in your corner can help with this. Many times all we need is that extra boost of motivation. Before you know it, you’ll see Spring start to come around, and you’ve avoided the Winter setbacks that happen to so many.
